(After Juliet’s fake death)
SCENE 1
Romeo
Do you have any news about Verona? Juliet?
Balthazar
I’m afraid there isn’t sir.
Romeo
It’s so hard to be away from my wife. I’d rather die than to
be exiled from Verona. Mantua is nothing like home. Mantua does not simply have
a Juliet.
Balthazar
We’ll just have to wait for some time to have news about
your partner sir.
Romeo
I guess we’ll have to.
SCENE 2
(Friar Lawrence is quickly on his way to the Capulet’s tomb
after Friar John failed to deliver the letter to Romeo when the nurse spotted
him)
Nurse
Friar oh, Friar. It’s been a very bad day for me and the
Capulets. We suddenly lost an angel!
Friar Lawrence
I understand but she’s in a great place now. With our
dearest God. You see, I must go –
Nurse
No friar! The Capulets want to confess and pray for their
sins!
Friar Lawrence
I’m afraid I can’t do that right now.
Nurse
But Friar, the family is in an awful stage. Losing a child
is never easy. Please pity the Capulet and the lady.
Friar Lawrence
Fine, but I must leave right after.
SCENE 3
Lady Capulet
Friar! It’s simply my fault that our daughter died. I’m
always telling her what to do! I, I, didn’t think of her to feel that way. She
was depressed and I didn’t feel it. What kind of a mother am I?
Friar Lawrence
Don’t worry Madame. It’s not your fault. It was just the
right time. The angels and the saints need her more.
Capulet
No, it’s not yours, love. It’s mine.
Father, I thought he’d love Paris. I quickly managed the
wedding. She told me she’d marry Paris but I know she’s reluctant! But why did
I do nothing? I’m a terrible person. I killed my own daughter!
Friar Lawrence
No, no. Christ have forgiven you and your wife’s sins. You
are not responsible of dearest Juliet’s death. It was just simply her time.
Now, now I must go.
Capulet
Where are you heading friar?
Friar Lawrence
Nothing important. I just need to check something.
SCENE 4
(Friar runs vigorously to the Capulet’s tomb)
(Paris’ Page is already hiding in the darkness)
Paris
Friar! What are you doing here?
Friar Lawrence
I just need to do something. Will you please leave?
Paris
With all due respect, I must not, Friar. My love for Juliet
will never end. May death take me with her.
Friar Lawrence
But you simply must!
Paris
I will not. Whatever you’ll do, I will stay here.
Friar Lawrence
But Juliet’s alive!
Paris
How on earth is Juliet alive? She’s buried! The doctors said
her pulse stopped. It’s simply impossible!
Friar Lawrence
I’ll open the tomb.
Paris
Is she?
(Friar Lawrence sees Juliet with no life)
Friar Lawrence
She must be alive!
Paris
What do you mean Friar?
Friar Lawrence
It’s too late.
Paris
What are you talking about Friar?
Friar Lawrence
I, I, I killed Juliet. I gave her a sleeping potion that
will stop her life and will bring her back after 2 days. I was late.
Paris
You killed my Juliet?!?
(With anger, Paris stabbed the Friar with his dagger)
Friar
Lawrence dies.
SCENE 5
Romeo
I must see Juliet. I shall go to Verona
Balthazar
But sir, you are exiled from Verona, you might be killed!
Romeo
I should risk my life seeing my loving wife.
(Romeo goes to Verona)
SCENE 6
(Romeo is in Juliet’s balcony)
Romeo
My dearest wife, I came here all the way from Mantua to see
you. I have risked my life to feel your presence by me. Please open your
window.
-
-
Juliet? Juliet? It’s me Romeo. There’s nothing to be afraid
of.
-
Nurse
Romeo? What are you doing here?
Romeo
I came to see Juliet! Where is she?
Nurse
No you must not! She’s married to Paris already!
Romeo
But I am her husband!
Nurse
Not anymore.
Romeo
This can’t be, I must see her! Juliet!
(Romeo barges out of Juliet’s room into the living room
where Capulet and Lady Capulet are; Nurse is following Romeo)
Romeo
Juliet!
Capulet
Romeo Montague? What are you doing in my house?
Romeo
Where is Juliet?
Lady Capulet
And why are you looking for our daughter?
Romeo
Because she is my wife!
Capulet
Impossible! My daughter does not even know you!
Romeo
It’s true. Nurse! Tell him the truth!
Nurse
True, sir.
Lady Capulet
What?!?! You can’t
(Paris barges in)
Paris
Sir! I know what caused Juliet’s death!
Romeo
Juliet’s dead?!?
Paris
Who are you? Montague? What are you doing in a Capulet’s
house?
Romeo
For I am Juliet’s husband. I am related to them.
Paris
What are you saying? (to Romeo)
Do you know this? (to Capulet)
Capulet
I do not! I just knew this!
Romeo
Who killed Juliet?
Paris
Friar Lawrence killed Juliet! He gave her a sleeping potion
to never wake up again!
Romeo
Friar? He can never do this! He was the one who married
Juliet and me!
Paris
I’m afraid you can’t see the friar again.
Romeo
What are you saying?
Paris
I killed him.
Romeo
You are a doltish man! You must be punished for killing a
friar! (Romeo brings his dagger out and stabbed Paris)
Paris
dies.
Lady Capulet
You and my daughter are in love? (Still in shock of knowing
her daughter’s married to a Montague)
Romeo
Deeply, Madam (mourning from Juliet’s death).
Capulet
To a Montague?
Romeo
Name is not a hindrance in love, sir. My love for Juliet is
never ending.
(Prince barges in together with Paris’ Page)
Prince
The Page told me Paris is here and killed the friar! Where
is Paris?
(Prince sees Paris killed)
Who’s responsible for this?
(Prince sees Romeo)
Romeo! You are exiled from Verona! You are not supposed to
be here. Do you know the consequence of your action!
Romeo
It does not matter anymore. My love is dead! There is no
reason to live anymore!
Prince
Are you also the one who killed Paris? Huh?
Romeo
I am! Now, I must not live! I should go with my wife!
(Prince about to stab Romeo)
Capulet
Do not touch my son-in-law! My daughter loves him!
Prince
He must pay the consequences of his actions! He is exiled
from Verona, came back and killed Count Paris! That is no longer acceptable!
Lady Capulet
We will pay any price!
Prince
There is no price for his sins! No money can repay life!
(Montague enters)
Montague
But we know what Verona wants from us.
Prince
What is that then?
Montague
Peace from both parties.
We’ll give up this rivalry for the sake of my son! My son
had been in so much pain! He lost his wife for God’s sake! He also lost his
mother! Isn’t that enough!
Romeo
Father? How did you ever know about my marriage?
Montague
Son, the guards called me and told me on the way here.
Prince
Fine! Both names must be in peace! If any more crimes have
done concerning the Montague and the Capulets, I swear to God, I will torture
every family!
Lady Capulet
How about Romeo? Is he still exiled from Verona?
Prince
He will stay exiled for 2 years. I must go! This drama is
getting all over me!
Capulet
Nurse! Tell me what you know about this affair!
Nurse
Everything that Romeo said is true. He is married to Juliet.
Friar Lawrence married them both in a secret wedding, they were married the
same day Tybalt died. That’s all I know! I do not know anything about what
Paris said!
SCENE 6
Benvolio
Cousin, you are very fortunate.
Romeo
How can I be fortunate if my wife, mother and Friar Lawrence
dead?
Benvolio
Just remember that they are now happy in heaven. Juliet will
no longer be bothered by the quarrel, your mother will be happy you’re safe and
sound and Friar Lawrence? He’ll forever be grateful that he tried to help both
of your love. Look, the enemies of peace are now literally in peace.
Romeo
You’re right cousin. However, it will be better if my Juliet
will see that our family is both in good terms. I know she’s happy up there.
SCENE 7
Capulet
Oh, brother Montague, give me your hand. This is my
daughter’s dowry. I can ask you for nothing more.
Montague
Our quarrels are simply nonsense. Let’s not fight anymore.
We’ll make up, we promise you.
They
all exit.
